- Speed of SSD vs HDD Final Verdict
In 2021 the SSDs are becoming more and more popular with decreasing in price, The SSDs become one of the most important component of todays personal computers, However user still somewhat wanted to know more about. So lets begins making our long story short, moreover today focus will be mainly on Speed of SSD vs HDD after that we will see other advantage of solid state dive
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3200G
- GPU: radeon rx 570
- Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX
- SSD: ADATA SU650 240 GB M.2 Solid State Drive
- HDD: Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB
- RAM: HyperX Fury 8GB 3200MHz
- POWER SUPPLY: GIGABYTE GP-P450B
Speed of SSD vs HDD:
We compared speed of SSD vs HDD in various method, starting from OS installation, Booting, software open, and gaming, so without exaggerating lets begin the comparisons.
Installing window 10 pro:
The hard disk and solid state drive are very different from each other you will notice from installing window onwards, as shown in Image installing window on SSDs take very lest time as compared to HDDs, in around 7 minutes the SSD able to complete full installation of window 10 pro.
However the HDD able to complete in 18 minutes taking almost 3 times of the SSD, with this data we can clearly say that Solid state are extremely fast storage device and worth changing from hard disk drive to solid state drive.
Boot-up time: starting pc
In the speed facet, an SSD is faster than an HDD. When searching for “SSD VS HDD speed”, you will certainly find some videos on the SSD and HDD speed test, particularly the boot time. Respectively, the ordinary bootup time of an SSD is around 20 to 25 seconds where as the ordinary bootup time of an HDD is 60 to 80 secs.
When describing speed of SSD vs HDD for boot time, SSD is the champion. The HDDs’ mechanical nature restrictions their total efficiency. Although hard disk manufacturers function tirelessly to boost-up data transfer rates and also reduce latency but still HDDs’ are limited. SSDs provide massive performance value over disk drives. A computer with an SSD boots faster, launches software quicker and runs apps quicker, and transfers files faster. This is where SSDs shine.
Software opening time:
In speed comparison of opening software we will open few software that we use daily.
Google chrome opening speed of SSD vs HDD
The google chrome is most used browser in 2021 from last 10 years its dominating the browser industry but chrome isn’t lightweight browser it required minimum of 4gb+ of ram to operate few tabs beside of ram google chrome takes longer time to open in HDD around 2 minutes average “at least in my pc Its may take less in you HDD system”
However in SSD it will take at max 10 sec in any system but in my system it takes around 4 sec to fully load google chrome, so having SSD will improve opening time and it will give more flawless browser experience, since speed of browser is depend on internet so don’t expect you will start getting fast loading webpage but for uploading & saving image it will open pc drive in lightning fast.
Photoshop opening: speed of SSD vs HDD
If you are using any software that’s required rendering I will suggest you should have SSD although rendering is highly depended on GPU but SSDs’ data transferring help alot if you paired with good RAM.
Moreover opening like Photoshop software takes time With HDDs’ but with SSDs’ it will open like Microsoft paint, so as shown in picture my SSD system able to open in just 12 sec whereas our old fashion hard disk drive able to open same version of Photoshop in 35 sec.
Hitfilm Free: alternative of After Effects
Editing specialists have actually discovered that the complete capacity of an SSD is achieved when the total system equipment particularly the CPU (processor) can take care of the tremendous data transfer rate. A lot of video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or hitfilm cache the upcoming frames or video clip file in RAM from SSD or HDD for rapid gain access so if you have HDD it will transfer low data rate to RAM, to avoid low data rate SSD is recommended.
If you are planning to build desktop or buying laptop then go with SSD system but don’t forget to look at CPU, at least buy with i3 or ryzen 3 with latest gen.
Gaming Loading: Speed of SSD vs HDD
|Games Name||GPU||Graphic setting||FPS||Loading time SSD||Loading time HDD|
|Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, 2018||Radeon rx 570||High,1920X1980p||High||00:00:27:01||00:00:52:09|
|Far Cry New Dawn, 2019||Radeon rx 570||High,1920X1980p||High||00:00:54:03||00:01:12:06|
|Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 2018||Radeon rx 570||Highest,1920X1980p||High||00:00:26:08||00:00:38:02|

|Metro Exodus, 2019||Radeon rx 570||Ultra,1920X1980p||High||00:00:24:08||00:00:57:02|
The average loading time of any game is 62.2% faster then typical HHD, and moreover my system is not that powerful which meant if you buy more better SSD it will improve more loading time.
However things to remember SSD is not only the component that will increase performance, the CPU must have the power to transfer data from SSD, without the powerful CPU no matter how costly SSD you buy it will not preformed to its potential.
All things you should know before buying your first SSD.
What is SSD?
The solid state drive the name itself said its a solid which mean there is no moving part like HDD. The data is stored in the form of electrical charges due to non moving parts which make more durable and faster.
|Advantages of SSD||Disadvantages of SSD|
|Consume less power compared to HDDs||SSDs data recovery is costly & complex|
|SSDs doesn’t have any moving parts so it doesn’t vibrate or make noise while running||SSDs are expensive but Now many low price SSDs are available in the market|
|SSDs are much faster than HDDs around 62% faster||Sometimes high-speed transistors cause the heat in SSD|
|They’re less prone to physical damages as they don’t have movable component||The top storage unit for SSD available is lesser than an average HDD|
Types of SSDs: M.2 SSD & 2.5 inch SSD
The most common SSDs are two type M.2 SSD and 2.5 inch SSD which is similar to 2.5 inch HDD “laptop Hard drive” form factor and connector.
However M.2 is furthered divided in SATA (serial advanced technology attachment)and NVme (nonvolatile memory express). Although M.2 sata and NVme look similar except the key, where NVme has one m key only where as Sata M.2 has two key M and B but in terms of performance their is vast different, the SATA M.2 have data transferred rate of 550MBps at max where as NVme M.2 have 7000MBps which is huge different between them so if you are looking for SSD then buy one with the NVme technology.
Beside SATA and NVme again their is different size of SATA M.2 SSD as shown in upper image we can clearly see that there are many size of SATA. However the size doesn’t affect on performance, the most common SATA is 2280, 22mm by 80mm( 22 is wide and 80 is length), however if you are buying any of this SSD I will suggest go with 2280 since its availability is vast and cheaper then rest with same performance.
Misconception: M.2 vs 2.5 inch SSD
Many people thing M.2 is better then 2.5 inch SSD but which is not always right, The M.2 can be SATA or NVme, same as 2.5 inch SSD can be SATA or PCLe NVme, The NVme version of 2.5 inch SSD called U2.
U.2 SSD looks like normal 2.5 inch SATA SSD but only difference is connector, moreover U.2 is not for normal consumer, its is industry grade SSD with more storage capacity and more speed, some U.2 SSD like Samsung PM1643A comes with SAS(serial attached SCSI) which can provide data transfer up to 1200MBps or twice of that. But however the the U.2 interface is different then M.2 or SATA there are only few motherboard that’s come U.2 interface so its very unlikely normal consumer will buy U.2.
Types of SSDs form factor & Interface
- 2.5 inch SSD: The 1st generation of SSDs are the SATA SSD. The connector is same as old HDD you can connect via SATA cable out of box and you can directly install in Laptop. Moreover SATA can reach a read speed of up to 550MB per second. These first-generation SSDs are usually 5 times faster than a traditional HDD. These SSDs start your laptop computer within 15 seconds. Beside that there are interface of 2.5 inch like U.2(PCIe NVme) or SAS but they are not common with normal user and costly too.
- M.2 SSD: The most widely use form factor by motherboard maker. M.2 NVMe SSD can reach rates of over 2600MB per second. When a motherboard does not have a M. 2 adapter, an NVMe SSD is connected using a PCIe card that has a M. 2 connector. That’s why some laptops have a PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. If the motherboard does have a straight M.2, you’ll see SATA M.2 or NVMe M.2.
- AIC: when a NVMe SSD is connected with PCie adaptor, its get maximum bandwidth and can get the maximum speed from an NVMe SSD. You will only discover a difference in speed when you deal with the large documents of 50GB or bigger. Moreover this is the way that can make your M.2 NVme to it maximum performance.
- mSATA: The era of mSATA are over nowadays new laptop or computer dosent come with mSATA although it was popular in 2011 but now in 2021 its new model like M.2 NVme SSD 2280 2260 are dominating the market.
When it comes to capacity of solid state drive, The SSDs are available from 120GB to 30.72TB capacities, whereas our old HDDs can go anywhere from 120GB to 20TB. However when measuring the cost per capacity of both storages, HDDs come out on top, but rapidly SSDs price is dropping as the market is flooded with new competitor.
SSDs are relatively brand-new in the market, meaning manufacturers are still attempting to find out how much time they will certainly last long. Currently, vendors utilize three different aspects to estimate SSD lifespan: the age of the SSD, the complete variety of terabytes edited time (TBW), as well as the drive writes per day (DWPD). According to expert SSDs last long for at least 5 years from its date of manufacturing. However it may be short in rare case but according to user data it sometimes last long for more then 7 yeas, so buy the one with good review and branded.
- DRAM: SSD with DRAM, dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) is one of the most important thing in SSDs, if you are planning your SSDs to be booting drive then DRAM ram should be available. Users has found that SSDs with DRAM, which offered higher read/write speeds thanks to their short-term memory DRAM. However, this often came with a higher cost.
Speed of SSD vs HDD Final Verdict
The speed of SSD vs HDD debate is over because we get the clear winner, the SSD performed very faster then typical HDDs so our recommendation is to buy SSD for your booting drive and for data storing buy good branded HDD, with the dual system you can save money & time without compromising to your system performance.
