Types of SSDs: M.2 SSD & 2.5 inch SSD
The most common SSDs are two type M.2 SSD and 2.5 inch SSD which is similar to 2.5 inch HDD “laptop Hard drive” form factor and connector.
However M.2 is furthered divided in SATA (serial advanced technology attachment)and NVme (nonvolatile memory express). Although M.2 sata and NVme look similar except the key, where NVme has one m key only where as Sata M.2 has two key M and B but in terms of performance their is vast different, the SATA M.2 have data transferred rate of 550MBps at max where as NVme M.2 have 7000MBps which is huge different between them so if you are looking for SSD then buy one with the NVme technology.
Beside SATA and NVme again their is different size of SATA M.2 SSD as shown in upper image we can clearly see that there are many size of SATA. However the size doesn’t affect on performance, the most common SATA is 2280, 22mm by 80mm( 22 is wide and 80 is length), however if you are buying any of this SSD I will suggest go with 2280 since its availability is vast and cheaper then rest with same performance.
Misconception: M.2 vs 2.5 inch SSD
Many people thing M.2 is better then 2.5 inch SSD but which is not always right, The M.2 can be SATA or NVme, same as 2.5 inch SSD can be SATA or PCLe NVme, The NVme version of 2.5 inch SSD called U2.
U.2 SSD looks like normal 2.5 inch SATA SSD but only difference is connector, moreover U.2 is not for normal consumer, its is industry grade SSD with more storage capacity and more speed, some U.2 SSD like Samsung PM1643A comes with SAS(serial attached SCSI) which can provide data transfer up to 1200MBps or twice of that. But however the the U.2 interface is different then M.2 or SATA there are only few motherboard that’s come U.2 interface so its very unlikely normal consumer will buy U.2.

- 2.5 inch SSD: The 1st generation of SSDs are the SATA SSD. The connector is same as old HDD you can connect via SATA cable out of box and you can directly install in Laptop.
